Lady Charlotte Leveson-Gower (1788-1870)
Sun of the sleepless Text: George Gordon Byron (Lord Byron) from Hebrew Melodies Sun of the Sleepless! Melancholy star! Whose tearful beam glows tremulously far, That show’st the darkness thou canst not dispel, How like art thou to Joy remembered well! So gleams the past, the light of other days, Which shines but warms not with its powerless rays: A night-beam Sorrow watcheth to behold, Distinct, but distant – clear – but, oh, how cold! 아래 Mendelssohn과 Loewe는 "Sun of the sleepless" 독일어 버젼 text에 쓴 곡들이다. [Carl Loewe] Die Sonne der Schlaflosen op.13 no.6 - Iris Vermillion Byron's "Sun of the sleepless" contains images associated with light - sun, gream, moon, and star - which have metaphoric meanings: The sun of the sleepless is actually the moon. The speaker addresses the moon as melacholy with a tearfull beam that illuminates the darkness. This ia also a reference to the speaker's solitude and depression. This poem was written on Sept 8, 1814 after Charlotte Leveson-Gower refused Byron's proposed courtship, citing that she hardly knew him and her family has other marriage plans for her. Actually about 3 months later she married Henry Charles Howard, an english noble family member.
