Crossing The Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,

When I have crost the bar.

제목 Crossing the bar의 "bar"는 "sandbar", 즉 "모래톱"의 의미로
삶과 죽음 사이의 경계를 뜻한다.
저자 Alfred Tennysond은 자신의 시집 마지막 장에 이 시를
넣도록 유언했다니 어쩌면 그의 swan song인 셈이다.
건너야할 이 세상과 영원한 세계의 접경에 서서 죽음 후의 미지의 세계를
기대하며 그 길을 "인도해 줄 분"을 만나는 기대와 염원를 노래하고 있다.
