Symphonie fantastique과 Lélio가 모두 Berlioz의 불행한 love affair에서
착상되었다는데 전자는 Hamlet의 Ophelia역을 맡은 여배우 Harriet Smithson,
그리고 후자는 Camille Moke가 그 장본인들이라 한다. (후자의 확실성에 대해서는
학자들 사이에도 debat가 있는듯 하다만...).
Symphonie fantastique가 아편의 과용으로 죽어가는 한 예술가의 환상을 담은 반면
속편 Lélio는 환상으로 부터 깨어나 현실로의 귀환을 담고 있다:
Lélio의 시작 monologue가 "Dieu! Je vis encore (God! I am still alive)..."인 이유이다.
Berlioz가 Italy 여행 중 1831년에 쓴 "Lélio 렐리오"는 music과 spoken text로 구성된다:
Lélio에 붙는 부제 "Le retour à la vie, mélologue en six parties"
(Returning to life 삶으로의 귀환, melologue in 6 parts)는 작품의 내용과
형식을 암시한다. 여기서 "melologue"는 melodrama와 monologue의 합성어이다.
Lélio는 전에 작곡한 곡들을 재인용한 부분들을 포함하여 아래의 6 part로 구성됬다:

Il y a cinq ans qu’Horatio écrivait cette ballade imitée de Goethe
et que j’en fis la musique.
Nous étions heureux alors; son sort n’a pas changé, et le mien...
Cinq ans! que j’ai souffert depuis lors!
Five years ago Horatio wrote this ballad in imitation of Goethe
and I did the music.
