William Vincent Wallace의 opera "Maritana"
스페인 마드리드를 배경으로 왕위를 탐내는 각료 Don José의 음모와 계략,
뜻하지 않게 이 plot에 휩쓸렸다 서로 사랑하게 되는 gypsy girl, Maritana와
귀족 청년, Don César de Bazan의 얘기이다.
Wallace의 Maritana는 Michael Balfe의 Bohemian Girl,
Julius Benedict의 Lily of Killarney와 더불어 "The Irish Ring"

Madrid 감옥
Don Cesar의 후원을 받다가 같이 감옥에 들어온 가난한 소년 Lazarillo,
곁에 잠들어 있는 Don Cesar의 운명을 슬퍼하며 부르는 자장가이다.

Don Jose 의 계략에 빠져 총살형을 받은 Don Cesar
용맹스런 군인처럼 죽겠다는 자신의 의지를 노래한다.

Lazarillo의 기지로 총살형에서 살아 돌아온 Don César,
결혼식 중 비록 베일에 쌓여있었지만 Maritana를 만나면 그녀를
알아 볼 수 있다는 Don Cesar의 아리아이다.

화려하게 꾸며진 넓은 거실에 혼자 남은 Maritana,
같은 날 얼마전에 결혼한 그 사람과 같이 할 수 없다면 이 모든 것들이
무슨 의미가 있을 것인가의 독백이다.
