Handel 오페라 "Xerxes"의 대상 인물 Xerxes I 은 고대 Persia의 실존 왕으로
465 BC 경 경호 군대장 Artabanes에 의해 암살되는데 Thomas Arne의 Artaxerxes는
이 역사적 배경에 Xerxes와 Artabanes의 인물들을 연인 관계로 묶는 극적 요소를
설정하여 쓴 오페라이다.
등장 인물은 아래와 같다:
Artaxerxes; Xerxes의 아들로 Arbaces의 친구Mandane; Xerxes의 딸, Arbaces의 연인
Artabanes; Xerxes의 경호 군대장
Arbaces; Artabanes의 아들
Semira; Artabanes의 딸, Artaxerxes의 연인
아버지를 살해한 죄에 불구하고 Artaxerxes는 친구 Arbaces로 부터 받은
도움과 자신의 연인의 아버지임을 감안하여 Artabanes를 사형 대신 영원히
국외로 추방시킨다. 오페라는 Arbaces와 Mandane, Artaxerxes와 Semira,
두 쌍의 연인의 결합을 축하하며 막을 닫는다.

사족:
혹자는 Artaxerxes (구약 에스라와 느헤미야에 등장하는 아닥사스다) 왕이
에스더의 아들일 가능성을 언급하나 이것은 시간적으로 불가능한 얘기이다.
다만 Esther가 Artaxeres의 재위 초반까지 살아있으며 에스라에게 허락한
소위 제2차 유대인 포로 귀환의 결정에 영향을 주었을 가능성은 있다.
학자들은 Artaxerxes를 Amestris (Amastris)의 아들로 추측하는데 그녀는
구약 Esther서에서 아하수에로 (Xeres I)의 명을 거역하고 폐위된 와스디
(Vashiti)와 동일 인물이다.
