That I was used to drive

시는 "내 동료들은 밭을 갈고 있는가?" 질문하는 망자와 그의 친구,
Shropshire의 20세 청년의 대화이다.
어쩌면 시의 화자와 망자는 1차 대전을 같이 싸웠을거고
(물론 Houseman의 설정은 알 수 없지만 그 시대의 상황을
더듬어 꾸민다면 말이다) 한 사람만 살아 돌아왔을 듯...
농사는 잘 되어가는지, 아직도 친구들은 강가 운동장에서 공을 차는지,
그리고 자신의 여친은 잘 지내는지, 친구는 건강한지, 묻는 망자의
질문에 화자의 답은 life is as usual 이란다. 자신의 여자친구가
된 망자의 여친을 포함하여...
"I cheer a dead man's sweetheart,
Never ask me whose."

A. E. Housman의 시집 "A Shropshire Lad"는 63편 poem cycle 구성이다.
1896년 Houseman의 자비로 처음 출판 후 (당시 여러 출판사가 거절했단다)
지금도 계속 발간되는 long-running 작품이다.

on Wenlock Edge", George Butterworth의 "A Shropshire Lad", 등등
Houseman의 이 text에 곡을 쓴 song cycle이다.
