Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

나무 중에서 가장 아름다운 벚나무가 지금
가지 마다 만발한 꽃을 드리우고
부활절 계절 즈음에 흰 옷을 입고서
숲속 오솔길 옆에 줄지어 서있구나
이제 내 일흔 살 생애 중에서
스물은 다시 돌아오지 않을진대
일흔의 봄에서 스물을 뺀다면
남은 것은 단지 쉰 뿐이구나
화사로운 벚꽃을 보기에는
쉰의 봄도 너무 아쉬운대
어서 벚나무 울창한 숲으로 가련다

사족:
지금의 평균 수명을 감안하면 Houseman의 "일흔 살 생애"의 표현에는 무리가 있다만
이는 시편 90:10의 기록, "우리의 년수가 칠십 (threescore years and ten)이요
강건하면 팔십 (fourscore years)"과 일치한다.
