1. The Lament of Ian the Proud
Music: Charles T. Griffes, from Song cycle, Three Poems of Fiona Macleod, Op. 11
Text: William Sharp, under the pseudonym Fiona Macleod
What is this crying that I hear in the wind?
Is it the old sorrow and the old grief?
Or is it a new thing coming, a whirling leaf
About the gray hair of me who am weary and blind?
I know not what it is, but on the moor above the shore
There is a stone which the purple nets of heather bind,
And thereon is writ: She will return no more.
O blown, whirling leaf, and the old grief,
And wind crying to me who am old and blind!

The Lament of Ian the Proud, Op. 11 No. 1

Charles Griffes의 "finest" 로 알려진 "The Lament of Ian the Proud" -
평론가들은 영미가곡 중 가장 위대한 곡의 하나로 손꼽는다.
The song tells of an old man's grief and sorrow, which he hears as
cries blowing in the wind. As he recalls his memories - the stone on
the moor that marks the grave of his beloved ("she will return no more")
- Griffes builds intensity toward the final emotional climax.
It is a mournful song, almost chilling in its sadness.
