Into my heart an air that kills
Music: Arthur Somervell, A Shropshire Lad, "Into My Heart an Air that Kills", No. 9
Text: A. E. Housman, A Shropshire Lad, No. 40
Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

note:
Published as part of his collection A Shropshire Lad,
"Into my heart an air that kills" was written shortly
after his father’s death.
It is a poem steeped in wistfulness for his childhood,
and is preoccupied with memory and loss.
