그녀의 시선과 마음은 책에 전념하였다.
그녀의 머리칼이 나의 얼굴을 스쳤다
그녀의 한숨은 내 목소리에 메아리쳤다.
책에서 눈을 떼어 바라보는 그녀의 천사같은 얼굴에서,
나는 그녀의 미소에 담긴 순결함을 보았다.
나는 그녀의 아름다운 손을 기쁨으로 헐떡이는 내 가슴 위에 잡았다...
우리는 더이상 책을 읽을 수 없었고... 그리고 책은 땅에 떨어졌다.
우리는 함께 책을 읽고 있었다, 아! 아!
길고 뜨거운 입맞춤로 우리의 타는 입술은 합해졌다,
그리고 우리의 영혼은 미지의 하늘로 날아 올랐다.

Puccini의 다른 가곡들 처럼 이 곡도 그의 오페라 'Edgar'에 다시
사용되었다는데 정확히 어느 부분인지 아직 확인하지 못하였다.

가사에는 Paolo 와 Francesca의 첫키스 이야기가 담아있다.
서재에서 러브스토리를 읽던 두사람은 열정적인 포옹과 키스에
빠진다. 결과는 Paolo의 형의 칼에 의한 두 사람의 무참한 죽음이다.
Paolo Malatesta와 Francesca da Rimini의 이야기는 단테의 신곡,
지옥편(Dante's inferno)에 들어있다.
