Mignon by William Bouguereau
Ambroise Thomas, Mignon, Act I, Scene VI . . GUGLIELMO: Where are thy parents? MIGNON: Alas! my mother sleeps. Ah woe is me! I know not where; The Great Devil died some time ago. GUGLIELMO: The Great Devil! What dost thou mean? MIGNON: He was my first master; GUGLIELMO: And he it was, who sold thee. To the fellow who, just now was beating thee? Speak! Relate to me thy history; Perchance I may be able to assist thee Thou answer'st not? MIGNON: Alas! of my entire infancy One souvenir alone is left me; 'Twas dusk! along a broad lake's banks I ran, When suddenly, a crowd of men, Whose faces were to me unknown, did press around me: A piercing shriek I utter'd, and through the fields I headlong hurried, but was caught and ta'en! GUGLIELMO: But tell me! Of the scenes which, when a child, thou left'st, Hast thou no recollection? Were I to break thy chains and set thee free, To what beloved spot would'st wend thy way? MIGNON: (희미하게 기억하는 자기의 어릴 적의 고향에 대해 이야기하기 시작한다) Know'st thou a land the most beauteous of all, When the azure of the sky is more vividly blue, Where the sun has more warmth, where the birds are more blithe, Where, in all seasons alike, the bee sips from the flowers, Where 'neath the bright radiance of a cloudless heav'n, May, 'mid its roses, eternally reigns! Ah! could I but return to the land. Where my first childish cry of joy was uttered. There might I find repose, There might I love, aye- die!
