Flow gently, sweet Afton! amang thy green braes,
Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise;
My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,
Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.
Thou stockdove whose echo resounds thro' the glen,
Ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den,
Thou green-crested lapwing thy screaming forbear,
I charge you, disturb not my slumbering Fair.
How lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighbouring hills,
Far mark'd with the courses of clear, winding rills;
There daily I wander as noon rises high,
My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,
Where, wild in the woodlands, the primroses blow;
There oft, as mild Ev'ning weeps over the lea,
The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,
And winds by the cot where my Mary resides;
How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,
As, gathering sweet flowerets, she stems thy clear wave.

Sweet Afton -
1789년 Mrs. Francis Dunlop 에게 보낸 편지에 실린 시이다.
시어 중 "Mary"의 정체는 미스테리이지만 아마 Robert Burns의 연인,
"Highland Mary (Margaret Campbell)"로 학자들은 동의하는듯 하다.
그녀는 1786년 세상을 떴는데 Burns와 Campbell은 Fail 강가의
가시나무 (Mary's Thorn) 아래에서 정기적으로 만났다 한다.
Jonathan E. Spilman의 작곡으로 매우 친근한 이 시어의 번안은
개신교의 크리스마스 곡, "그 어린 주 예수 눌 자리 없어"로
어릴적 부터 흔이 듣는 곡이다.
위에 올린 Scottish trad 외에 Benjamin Britten*이나 John Rutter의
곡으로도 들을 수 있다.

Afton river -
Isle of Innisfree 처럼 아마 그저 평범한 장소이겠지만 시를
통하여 사람들의 마음에 남는 장소는 그곳에서의 추억과
연관되어 우리의 영원한 마음의 성지로 남는 것일게다.
그런 강이 내게도 있다. 내 소년 시절, 많은 시간을 보냈던 그 강.
지금은 둑을 쌓아 흐르는 강물을 갇아버려 옛적의 모습을 찾을 수
없지만 거기에 남은 추억은 아직도 나를 한 소년으로 되돌려 놓는다,
그 강가에서 시작된 첫사랑의 사연과 더불어.
